A Fun Way to Learn about the Five Basic Tastes!

I cannot believe we are in our LAST week of the school year!!! Where has the time gone?! As we are quickly approaching summer, we want to take a moment to THANK all of you for your continued support, love, and encouragement through this crazy year! We also hope that you and your family were able to benefit from the weekly blogs. Be sure to check out all the blogs on our website (bright-beginning.com)!!!

For our last week, we are going back to the beginning and touching on our Five Senses again as that goes with Savoring.

The 5×5 Senses Mindful exercise helps us by bringing our attention back to the present. We have this poster hung in our classrooms to help our children and teachers daily. We encourage you to hang this poster in your home for you and your family. Ask yourself (or a family member)…what are 5 things that you See? 5 things you Hear? Smell? Taste? And Feel?

A fun activity that you can do at home with your family is a TASTE TEST! We have done this activity many times with the children in the center and this helps them understand the five basic tastes: salt, sweet, bitter, sour, and umami (meaning savoriness). Plus, this is a fun way for children (and even some adults) to try new foods!

To help associate the basic tastes with different foods, here is a list below that you can try at home.

  1. Salty- salted butter, saltine crackers, soy sauce
  2. Sweet- honey, maple syrup, chocolate
  3. Sour- pure cranberry juice, lemon slice, plain yogurt
  4. Bitter- unsweetened cocoa powder, arugula, celery stick
  5. Umami- cooked meats, tomatoes, mushrooms, cheese

Be sure to come back in June as we focus on summer fun and safety!!!
