This past week, we focused on Mindfulness with the children during our Positive Education Special! The teachers asked the children if they knew what “mindful” means, followed by some examples. After a few guesses, the teachers informed the children that being mindful means being aware of something. The teachers then went into the 5×5 Senses Mindfulness activity with the children.
The mindfulness exercise is a quick exercise that you can do anywhere, like on your couch, at your desk, or even on the floor (like the children and teachers did for this activity) and helps by bringing you back to the present moment.
What 5 things can you see? What five things can you hear? What five things can you smell? What five things can you feel? What five things can you taste? We also asked the children what they LIKE to see, hear, smell, feel and taste as well.
This activity is a quick exercise that we encourage you to do at home! We also encourage you to try the 4-7-8 Breathing Exercise activity as well. With this activity, you can pretend there is a balloon in your belling by taking a long, deep breath in through your nose for 4 seconds and filling up the balloon with your breath. Gently hold your breath for 7 seconds and breathe out for a count of 8 seconds. Pretend that this is the air escaping through a tiny hole in the balloon. Relax your body, and then repeat 3 more times. Take a minute to think about your thoughts and what you are feeling during this activity. For our younger friends, we provided visuals of feelings using animal faces.
