A Recipe for Connection: Relationships, Connection, and Mindfulness at BBCLC

At Bright Beginning Children’s Learning Center, our Positive Education focus for November is Relationships, Connection, and Mindfulness. This month, we’re celebrating the everyday moments that help us feel seen, supported, and connected. We’re also exploring how we can create more of those moments for our children, families, and team.

We recently kicked off our first team-building event of the year with an online cooking class led by Kara LeClair of Kara LeClair Nutrition LLC! This shared experience gave our team an opportunity to connect outside our classroom routines, learn together, and enjoy time with one another.

Meet Kara LeClair

Kara is a registered dietitian and classically trained pastry chef who combines her nutrition knowledge and culinary experience to help families bring more joy to mealtimes. Her approach encourages curiosity and pressure-free food exploration while incorporating mindfulness and intuitive eating.

We were grateful to have Kara lead an experience that connected so naturally with our November focus. Cooking invites us to slow down, engage our senses, and pay attention to the moment, from noticing the colors of ingredients to enjoying the aromas filling the kitchen.

Connection Starts With Us

At BBCLC, nurturing our school community includes nurturing the relationships among the adults who care for our children.

Team-building experiences give us time to get to know one another beyond our daily responsibilities. They create opportunities to communicate, appreciate different perspectives, and strengthen our sense of belonging.

These are the same qualities we want to model in our classrooms: kindness, curiosity, cooperation, and care. Making time for our own connections helps us bring intention to the relationships we build with children and families.

Small Moments, Meaningful Relationships

For young children, connection often begins with simple, consistent gestures. A warm greeting, an invitation to play, or an adult who pauses to listen.

Throughout November, our focus invites us to be intentional about those moments. We can help children build relationships by modeling how to take turns, offer help, express feelings, and work through disagreements with support.

Mindfulness fits naturally into this work. Before responding to a challenging moment, we can pause and take a breath. During a conversation, we can give a child our full attention. At mealtime, we can slow down enough to notice and wonder together.

Mindfulness can begin with just a few seconds of paying attention, even in a busy classroom or home.

Bringing Connection Home

Families can explore this month’s focus through small moments woven into everyday routines:

  • Prepare something together. Invite your child to wash produce, stir ingredients, or help set the table. Choose tasks that fit their age and abilities.
  • Notice with your senses. Ask, “What colors do you see?” or “What does that smell remind you of?” Let curiosity guide the conversation.
  • Make room for conversation. Put distractions aside for a few minutes and ask, “What made you smile today?”
  • Practice a pause. Take a slow breath together before a transition or when emotions feel big.
  • Name your appreciation. Say, “Thank you for helping me,” or “I enjoyed spending this time with you.”

A simple snack prepared together or a few minutes of undivided attention can become a meaningful part of the day. These shared experiences give children opportunities to feel included, heard, and valued.

Thank you to Kara for helping us begin our year of team-building with an opportunity to learn and connect!

This November, we invite our BBCLC community to slow down, notice one another, and find joy in everyday opportunities to connect. Each moment of listening, kindness, and presence helps us grow together.
